Cellulite affects most women sometime in their life. Sometimes it happens to men – usually when they are overweight – but women are thought to be more prone due to the higher fat content in their bodies. While cellulite is often associated with being overweight, there is not an exact correlation with some thin women experiencing the condition.

The media often makes many women feel that are abnormal if they have cellulite. But this if far from the case. Many famous celebrities and models suffer from cellulite except it is well covered by makeup and special affects.

While cellulite is considered to be a skin condition, the cause is found just beneath the skin where there is a thin layer of fat. When these pockets of fat begin to bulge the skin starts to dimple. This layer of fat is difficult to remove and special treatments are required in order to do a decent job at reducing the pockets.

Cellulite is seen mostly in the hips, thighs and buttocks. However, it can be found in other areas of the body especially if there a is lot of fat in that particular area. Your predisposition to the condition is usually due to your genes. So the relationship between cellulite and excess fat is not a direct one with skinny women also suffering from it.

While genes are a major cause environmental factors can also be a major risk for the condition. Things such as smoking, being overweight and drinking too much alcohol can increase you risk of developing cellulite. Other risk factors including a slow metabolism, dehydration, spicy foods, certain medication (including the contraceptive pill) and not enough exercise.

Age is another major risk factor. As a woman gets older the skin begins to lose its strength and elasticity, and the structure that keeps the fat underneath the skin in place starts to lose its ability to secure the fat.

Changing the risk factors of developing cellulite can help you fight back against the condition. Begin by starting a new exercise program, eat more vegetables and fruit, and make sure you drink plenty of water. Avoid those bad foods that lots of calories or fat such as chocolate, fast food or snacks.

When exercising do a combination of cardio and weights. The cardio will burn fat while the weight will build muscle. This is the best combination of exercises to reduce cellulite in the body.
